MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Vikings women's soccer team opened their season against Buena Vista and came up just short, losing to the Beavers 2-1.
In a game with many chances for both teams, it was two goals by Buena Vista senior forward Caroline Maher that proved to be the difference.
Maher scored the first goal of the game with 16 minutes left in the first half, a shot that proved to be too tall for Bethany senior goalkeeper Averi Cash. Cash showed her experience in goal though, keeping the Vikings in the game with a total of 10 saves.
The Vikings were on the attacking side in the second half with many opportunities to tie it up. The Vikings controlled possession for most of the half and finally broke through with a penalty kick by senior forward Nicole Moldstad to tie the game 1-1 with three minutes left. Unfortunately, the Beavers quickly countered and got a second goal from Maher with two minutes left to seal the victory.
Up Next: The Vikings get their next chance on Wednesday, September 6 against St. Mary's in Winona, Minn.
