Vikings headed towards UMAC title game rematch

Box Score Mankato, Minn. - Last season, Bethany lost in the UMAC Championship Game to Northwestern 60-44 on its own home court. The Vikings will get their chance at revenge Saturday as Alex Weldon led four Vikings in double figures with 21 points to help defeat North Central 83-67 in a UMAC Tournament semifinal game on Wednesday.

This sets up a rematch with Northwestern for the UMAC Tournament Championship Game Saturday at 7 p.m. in St. Paul. The Eagles came back to defeat UM-Morris 83-80 Wednesday night.

The Vikings were hot from the start, especially Weldon who scored Bethany's first eight points. They went on to shoot nearly 54 percent in the first half while the Rams made only six shots and 22 percent from the floor. Bethany led by as many as 23 in the first half en route to a 38-17 halftime advantage.

The closest margin North Central came to in the second half was 12 as Bethany was never really threathened. Nathan Roeder, the UMAC's leading scorer, had 21 points. Jordan Harrell scored 16 while Luke Chafin had 11 and Ben Peters added 10.

Gavin Kroehler scored 19 points. Derek Peterson added 16 and Garrett Benson had 10 for Bethany.

Bethany and Northwestern played two tightly contested games this season with each team winning on the other's home court. The Vikings won in St. Paul 67-64 on January 12th and the Eagles returned the favor winning by the same margin, 89-86 in Mankato on February 8th.
