Women's soccer season ends in shootout

Box Score

Morris, Minn. – The women’s soccer team’s season ended in heart break when the third seeded Vikings fell in a shootout in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Semifinals at second seeded Minnesota-Morris.

The score remained tied 1-1 after double overtime to force the shootout. The first half was scoreless although the Cougars looked to have more control over the game. Minnesota-Morris scored in the second half at the 54:45 mark. Bethany took control over the remained of the second half. Paige Taylor (Coon Rapids, Minn. / Totino Grace) scored her tenth goal of the season at the 66:33 mark to tie the game. Her goal was assisted by Jacqui Bonrud (Tea, S.D. / Lennox). The two 10 minute overtime periods were evenly matched. With 30 second left to go in the second overtime the Cougars fouled a Bethany player. The free kick was close enough for a shot. It was just off the mark hitting the post to send the game into a shootout.

In the shootout the Cougars took the game to advance to the UMAC Championship. Out of five attempts MN-Morris was able to slip three balls past Bethany keeper Alexa Mowery (Fairmont, Minn. / Fairmont). The Vikings only made two of their five attempts.

Mowery recorded seven saves throughout her time in between the pipes. MN-Morris outshot the Vikings 14 to nine and had a seven to five corner kick advantage.

The Vikings earned third place in the UMAC regular season after finishing the year with their best conference record in school history at 10-4. Bethany went 12-7-1 overall. It was the women’s soccer team’s third appearance in the UMAC Post-Season Tournament in as many years.
