Duluth, Minn.—Viking softball survived the first day of the UMAC Post-Season Tournament, but then fell to Northwestern on the second day to end their season.
The game was very close, going into eight innings before the Eagles squeezed out the winning run. The Vikings finished out their season at 18-20.
Sarah Walczak (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) started on the mound, pitching three innings and allowing four runs before Kyla Schapekahm (New Prague, Minn./New Prague) relieved her. In the fifth inning, junior Amanda Edmison (Mayer, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) took over. Edmison finished off her season at 8-6.
Bethany took off running, with three runs by the second inning, including one earned on a wild pitch and one unearned on a fielder’s error. Northwestern fought hard, batting in a homer in the bottom of the second and turning a double play in the top of the third. The Vikings earned their fourth run in the same inning with an RBI by shortstop Ashley Jensen (Delano, Minn./West Lutheran). They tied the score in the fifth inning with an RBI by Edmison.
The game held at 5-5 until the bottom of the eighth when the Eagles’ catcher hit a sacrifice fly to right field for the winning run. There were two outs and one runner left on base when the game ended.
The Vikings finished fourth in the UMAC regular season, and third in the UMAC Post-Season. This game wraps-up the most successful season BLC softball has had in school history.
